Dinitration of p-Xylene and Practical Separation of 2,3-, 2,5-, and 2,6-Dinitro-p-xylenes

Abstract
A practical method for the preparation and separation of 2,3-, 2,5- and 2,6-dinitro-p-xylenes is described herein. The direct nitration of p-xylene with nitric acid (d 1.42) in the presence of sulfuric acid at 80o C afforded 2,3-, 2,5-, and 2,6- dinitro-p-xylenes in a ratio of 6.86:1:3.41, and the isomeric mixture could be readily separated by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with hexanes:EtOAc (19:1) as an eluent.
